Hijacking Democracy: How Laftagareen’s Personal Ambition Collided with the Somali People’s Will
March 20, 2026KHARTOUM — Sudan has appointed prominent pro-democracy figure Dr. Amgad Fareid Eltayeb as Political and Foreign Relations Advisor to the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, in a move seen as carrying both domestic and diplomatic significance amid the country’s ongoing conflict.
The appointment, dated March 16, 2026, comes as Sudan’s leadership seeks to strengthen international engagement while facing a prolonged war and mounting geopolitical pressures. Analysts say the inclusion of Dr. Eltayeb—widely regarded as an independent civilian voice outside Islamist networks—signals an effort to project a more inclusive and credible image of governance.
Dr. Eltayeb, a medical doctor born in Omdurman, has been active in Sudan’s pro-democracy movement for over two decades. He played a key role in founding the Girifina youth movement in 2009, co-founded Sudan Change Now in 2010, and led the nationwide Nafeer volunteer campaign during the 2013 floods. His activism led to repeated arrests under the former government of Omar al-Bashir.
Following Bashir’s removal in 2019, Eltayeb served as Assistant Chief of Staff to then-Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok between December 2019 and February 2021, where he was involved in civil service reform and engagement with international partners. More recently, he led the think tank Fikra for Studies and Development and worked as a political advisor with the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan.
In his new role, Dr. Eltayeb is expected to contribute to shaping Sudan’s external relations and crisis response strategy. His approach focuses on advancing an inclusive civilian political process, implementing institutional reforms, and addressing the role of armed groups, including calls to dismantle the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Observers also note his strong advocacy for human rights and humanitarian protection, suggesting his appointment could bring greater emphasis on these issues in Sudan’s diplomatic efforts, particularly in areas such as humanitarian aid, post-conflict recovery, and migration.
While the extent of his influence within the Sovereign Council remains to be seen, the appointment of a leading figure from Sudan’s democratic movement is widely viewed as a significant symbolic step.
