January 17, 2026The Federal Republic of Somalia has taken firm action against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), accusing it of activities that undermine Somalia’s sovereignty, constitutional order, and territorial integrity. In a statement released by the Presidency, the Somali government said that the UAE’s involvement in the commercial ports of Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo, as well as military facilities operating at these locations, violates the Somali Constitution.
The statement emphasized that Somalia holds exclusive authority over its land, airspace, territorial waters, and strategic infrastructure. Somali officials warned that any foreign engagement carried out outside the constitutional framework of the Somali Federal Government is unacceptable and will not be recognized.
The Presidency further announced that all security and defense agreements signed with the UAE by entities not affiliated with the Somali Federal Government or the country’s recognized Federal Member States lack constitutional and legal legitimacy. As a result, these agreements have been declared legally null and void.
Somalia reaffirmed its commitment to international law, regional cooperation, and diplomatic engagement, including with partners in Africa and the Arab world. However, the government made clear that cooperation must fully respect Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and constitutional system, adding that any actions threatening these principles will be met with decisive measures.
