Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has condemned the atrocities committed by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, describing them as a deliberate campaign of terror and genocide.
In a statement shared on X, Risch declared:
“The horrors in Darfur’s El-Fasher were no accident — they were the RSF’s plan all along. The RSF has waged terror and committed unspeakable atrocities, genocide among them, against the Sudanese people. The RSF must be called what it is: a foreign terrorist organization and officially designated as one. America is not safer, secure or more prosperous with the RSF slaughtering thousands.”
Risch’s remarks come amid mounting international outrage over reports of mass killings, looting, and civilian massacres in El Fasher following the city’s fall to the RSF.
Human rights experts and Western diplomats have warned that the violence could constitute crimes against humanity or genocide.
The Idaho senator called on the Biden administration to take decisive action, including designating the RSF as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and imposing tougher sanctions on those financing the group.
“Silence and inaction only embolden warlords and killers,” Risch said. “The United States must stand firmly with the Sudanese people against this brutality.”
