Ethiopian PM Abiy Says No Official Record Exists on How Ethiopia Became Landlocked, Links Eritrea Tensions to Pretoria Agreement
October 29, 2025Two prominent members of the U.S. Congress — Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-California) and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) — have issued strong statements condemning the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for their violent takeover of El Fasher, the last major Sudanese army stronghold in Darfur. Both lawmakers called for an immediate end to foreign support for the paramilitary group, particularly from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In a post on X, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs said she was “sickened” by the images emerging from El Fasher, urging the UAE to stop its alleged backing of the RSF.
“The UAE needs to cease their support NOW,” Jacobs wrote. “The [Trump] Administration needs to invest in a real peace process that is not rigged to benefit external backers of this horrific war.”
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar echoed those concerns in a separate statement hours later, describing the situation in Sudan as “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis and a genocide.” Omar said the RSF’s assault on El Fasher was “horrific,” adding that tens of thousands have been killed and 12 million displaced since the war began.
“The UAE and other arms dealers to the RSF and RSF-aligned militias must be held accountable,” Omar declared.
Their comments come amid growing international outrage following reports of mass killings, looting, and civilian massacres by RSF forces after capturing the city. Human rights organizations have warned that the violence may amount to crimes against humanity or genocide, urging the international community to take stronger action against those financing or arming the RSF.
Both lawmakers emphasized that the U.S. must play a more active role in pushing for an independent peace process in Sudan — one not influenced by foreign governments or private financiers fueling the conflict.
