October 26, 2025Somalia’s Waajid Holds First Voter Registration in 56 Years, Marking a New Democratic Chapter
In a historic moment, voter registration officially began today in Waajid District of the Bakool region, marking the first step toward a “one person, one vote” election in Somalia after 56 years.
Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur attended the launch event and was warmly welcomed by local residents, who gathered in large numbers to celebrate the occasion with songs, banners, and a spirit of optimism. His presence underscored the national importance of the milestone and the government’s commitment to advancing Somalia’s democratic transition.
“It is an honor to witness this milestone — the official launch of nationwide voter registration,” said a participant at the event, emphasizing that this is the first time in more than half a century that such a democratic process has been reintroduced in the country.
The launch symbolizes the beginning of a new democratic era, one that gives the Somali people the opportunity to directly choose their representatives in both governance and politics.
Observers describe the event as a sign of hope and political maturity, as Somalia moves toward a transparent and credible electoral system that restores citizens’ trust and ensures that politicians are accountable to the people they represent.
“This is the right time for Somalia to transition to an open and trustworthy electoral process that reflects the will of its citizens,” the statement continued.
The upcoming election is considered historic, as Somalia has held indirect elections for the past two decades. Citizens have long awaited the chance to cast their votes directly — a dream that now appears closer than ever to becoming a reality.
