Somalia Opens to the World Through Turkish-Operated Aden Adde International Airport
October 7, 2025Four of Puntland’s major political parties have issued a joint statement strongly denouncing a new agreement between the Puntland and Somaliland administrations, calling it “unconstitutional” and a threat to Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.
In a declaration released in Garowe, the IFIYE, MUSTAQBAL, MIDEEYE, and SINCAD parties said they convened an emergency meeting to evaluate the implications of the deal. The parties accused the Puntland government of signing the agreement without consulting political stakeholders, lawmakers, or the public, and described Somaliland as a “secessionist entity.”
Legal and Political Objections
The four parties argued that the deal violates the Puntland Constitution and contradicts the broader legal framework of the Federal Republic of Somalia. They warned that any move implying recognition of Somaliland’s right to self-determination would be “illegal and null.”
Their nine-point declaration categorically rejected the agreement, claiming it undermines Puntland’s political autonomy and aligns with “divisive and separatist agendas” detrimental to national unity. They urged the Puntland House of Representatives to immediately revoke the deal and called on the Federal Government of Somalia to clarify its stance and oppose actions that could erode Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Appeal for Unity and Dialogue
The joint statement also appealed to the people of Puntland to stand united against internal and external efforts to divide them. The parties encouraged inclusive dialogue on Puntland’s future, emphasizing the importance of protecting stability and democracy in the region.
Commitment to Somalia’s Unity
Concluding their statement, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to Puntland’s constitutional order and to defending the principles of unity, democracy, and federalism. They reiterated that Puntland’s foundation is rooted in safeguarding the interests of its citizens and preserving the unity of Somalia.
