Türkiye and Somalia: A Brotherhood of Destiny, Not Just Diplomacy
September 15, 2025MOGADISHU (AA) – Somali Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi declared that relations between Türkiye and Somalia are at their strongest point yet, stressing that both nations are committed to launching major projects together.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Fiqi highlighted cooperation in defense and recalled President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s historic 2011 visit to Somalia, when Mogadishu was still surrounded by the Al-Shabaab terror group.
“I remember that day well. Just a few days later, the city was liberated, and for the past 14 years the capital has enjoyed a sense of independence and stability,” he said, crediting Somali institutions and international partners, especially Türkiye, for that progress.
Somali Forces Equipped and Trained by Türkiye
Fiqi pointed to the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries’ defense ministries:
“As you can see, the latest Turkish-made combat helicopters are flying above us, alongside major defense equipment produced in Türkiye and used by our armed forces. Under the memorandum, Somali Special Forces are also being trained by Türkiye at the TURKSOM Military Training Base.”
The minister underlined Somalia’s ambition to pursue large-scale projects with Türkiye, particularly in the economic sphere, to strengthen stability.
‘This Relationship Will Endure’
Reflecting on the hardship and hunger of 2011, Fiqi contrasted those difficult days with the present:
“Today, we are in a much better place, and I see this relationship improving day by day,” he said, emphasizing that Türkiye’s largest embassy is located in Somalia.
Fiqi concluded with confidence:
“This relationship will endure.”
