Azerbaijan and Kenya Deepen Diplomatic Engagement with High-Level Talks in Nairobi
June 3, 2025BAKU – Somalia is deepening its collaboration with Azerbaijan in the field of renewable energy as part of an ambitious overhaul of its national energy sector, according to Abdullahi Bidhaan Warsame, Somalia’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources.
Speaking at the Baku Energy Forum, Minister Warsame emphasized that Somalia is in the midst of a critical transformation, with energy development at the heart of its economic agenda.
“As outlined in our National Development Plan, Somalia is working extensively to expand electricity access, explore renewable energy opportunities, and enhance climate resilience,” he stated, highlighting ongoing research and infrastructure initiatives.
As part of these broader efforts, Somalia recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy. The agreement aims to enhance cooperation in renewable energy development, technical training, and improving access to electricity across the country.
“This partnership opens up avenues for engagement with international stakeholders—technical, financial, and political—who can contribute to Somalia’s energy ambitions,” Minister Warsame said.
He also revealed that an 800 MW solar power facility has already been constructed, with more projects in the pipeline as the country seeks to harness its untapped green energy potential.
“Somalia enjoys year-round sunlight, making it an ideal location for solar power generation,” he added. “We are actively seeking investors to help us unlock this potential. Somalia, like much of Africa, is well-positioned to become a major producer of clean, sustainable energy.”
The Somali government’s push for renewable energy aligns with its broader goals of economic development, energy independence, and environmental sustainability.
