Somalia’s Outgoing Defence Minister Highlights Reforms, Military Progress, and Türkiye’s Strategic Role
April 6, 2025MOGADISHU, Somalia – Abdikadir Mohamed Nur, commonly known as Jaamac, is set to formally step down from his position as Somalia’s Minister of Defence this Sunday, concluding a tenure marked by major advancements in military capacity and international defense partnerships.
In a detailed report released ahead of the handover ceremony in Mogadishu, Jaamac outlined the accomplishments made during his two-year service at the helm of the Ministry of Defence. His term is noted for significantly improving the Somali National Army (SNA) and forging robust global defense alliances.
According to the report, Jaamac embarked on over 200 diplomatic missions, culminating in the signing of more than 10 critical defense agreements. These accords enhanced Somalia’s military capabilities through equipment support, intelligence cooperation, and border security initiatives.
“These partnerships have played a crucial role in strengthening our fight against armed groups and reinforcing the nation’s overall security,” the report emphasized.
A cornerstone of his legacy is the transformation of the Somali National Army. Under his guidance, over 20,000 SNA personnel received comprehensive training in modern warfare, human rights, ethical conduct, and technical operations. These efforts aimed to professionalize the armed forces and enhance their ability to confront both conventional threats and insurgency tactics.
Jaamac also led numerous military campaigns targeting the Al-Shabaab insurgency. His leadership contributed to the elimination of more than 5,000 militants and saw him spend over 250 days on the front lines—an extraordinary commitment for a cabinet official.
Beyond battlefield victories, these campaigns disrupted the group’s logistical operations and funding networks, striking at the core of its ability to operate.
Jaamac’s nationwide outreach was also highlighted in the report. He visited 14+ Federal Member States, pushing for stronger inter-regional coordination and unity. These visits were part of a larger effort to reinforce the federal system and promote collaboration across Somalia’s diverse regions.
As he exits his role at the Ministry of Defence, Jaamac will transition into a new leadership position as the Minister of Ports and Marine Transport. His new portfolio is expected to play a pivotal role in Somalia’s infrastructure development, with an emphasis on enhancing port operations and expanding the maritime sector to spur economic growth.
With his move to this vital ministry, Jaamac is poised to contribute further to Somalia’s long-term stability and prosperity through strategic maritime initiatives and regional trade facilitation.
His time in the defence ministry is widely regarded as a transformative period, setting a strong foundation for Somalia’s continued progress in security and governance.
