Somali militants target presidential convoy in bomb attack, president safe
March 19, 2025KHARTOUM March 17, 2025 – The Sudanese Army has announced a major breakthrough in its battle against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as its Armoured Corps successfully linked up with forces stationed at the General Command headquarters in Khartoum. This strategic move has significantly weakened the RSF’s presence in key areas of the city.
The operation, launched early Sunday, saw the Armoured Corps advancing north and east, securing large parts of Khartoum 2 and 3 neighborhoods. The army also took control of the Al-Musallamiya Bridge and El Nilein Towers, which the RSF had used for sniper positions. According to field commanders, seven mercenaries from South Sudan, who had been working as snipers for the RSF, were captured while attempting to flee central Khartoum.
Military sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that a large number of RSF fighters had surrendered after being encircled by the advancing army forces.
Strategic Gains and Reinforcements
Army spokesman Nabil Abdallah confirmed the success of the operation, stating:
“Today, the knights of the Armoured Corps joined the steadfast heroes at the General Command after cleansing the People’s Teaching Hospital of the rabble of the Daglo family militia.”
Videos circulating on pro-army platforms showed jubilant soldiers from southern Khartoum reuniting with their counterparts at the General Command headquarters.
This latest manoeuvre follows the army’s strategic deception on September 26th, when it tricked the RSF into massing fighters in the Al-Mogran area while simultaneously launching an armoured advance from the south. The successful link-up will now allow military reinforcements to flow into the General Command and facilitate a southward offensive to eliminate RSF strongholds in Yarmouk Military Complex, the Central Reserve camp, Tayba camp, and Jebel Aulia. The army also indicated that the operation could pave the way for regaining control of Khartoum International Airport.
Tightening the Noose on RSF
The arrival of the Armoured Corps at the General Command further strengthens the army’s grip on critical sites, including the Republican Palace and the Strategy Base, which remain under partial RSF control.
Since the conflict erupted, the RSF had maintained a siege on the Armoured Corps headquarters, launching multiple unsuccessful assaults in an attempt to capture the strategic location. However, recent advances by the army, including securing Al-Hurriya Bridge, have forced RSF forces to retreat towards the Presidential Palace, government buildings, and Tuti Island.
With this latest success, the Sudanese Army has dealt a severe blow to the RSF’s hold on central Khartoum, signaling a potential shift in the ongoing conflict.
