In discussing Turkey’s involvement in the Somali-Ethiopian peace process, Fidan noted that there is no active armed conflict between different regions of Somalia, which he considers a positive development. However, he also acknowledged ongoing tensions within the country. He pointed out that following the elections in Somaliland, things seem to have calmed down, which is seen as a positive sign.
Fidan emphasized that Turkey is collaborating with the Somali government to combat radical groups such as Al-Shabaab, and he expressed hope that the issue would eventually be resolved.
Regarding the peace deal between Somalia and Ethiopia, Fidan described it as a “success” and an exemplary case of African nations taking ownership of their own issues. He praised the Ankara Declaration between Ethiopia and Somalia as a significant agreement that demonstrates the capacity of African countries to address their own challenges with external support.
