February 20, 2025For years, the Somali government has been fighting the terrorist group Al-Shabaab. However, attacks and assaults continue to occur, with no end in sight.
Mogadishu – At least 13 soldiers have been killed in an attack by the Al-Shabaab terrorist group Al-Shabaab on three military bases in Somalia, according to the army. The militants first detonated car bombs before heavily armed fighters attacked the bases from multiple directions, a military spokesperson said. The attacks on two bases were repelled, but in the third case—an assault on a military camp near the strategically important town of Aaden-Yabal—there were casualties. Additionally, more than 20 soldiers were injured.
According to the government spokesperson, more than 130 militants were killed in the clashes.
Al-Shabaab, on the other hand, reported through its radio station that more than 100 soldiers were killed and numerous weapons were seized. The claims from both sides cannot be independently verified.
The Islamist Al-Shabaab group has been fighting in the Horn of Africa country for years, carrying out terror attacks in neighboring countries such as Kenya and Uganda. The group controls parts of Somalia but also frequently carries out attacks in the capital, Mogadishu, targeting politicians, journalists, and civil society representatives who support a Western lifestyle.
