AZERTAC analyzes Azerbaijan’s rapidly developing political relations with African countries, including the new opportunities created for Somalia.
Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Somalia were established on March 22, 2004. Over the years, especially recently, the increase in Azerbaijan-Somalia contacts has played a beneficial role in discussing cooperation prospects. In line with the agreement on political consultations signed between the two countries, the use of such mechanisms is crucial for expanding cooperation. There is significant potential for developing cooperation in various fields, including agriculture, fisheries, oil and gas, green energy, humanitarian affairs, and education. Mutual exchanges and experience-sharing in these areas are of particular importance.
It is worth noting that Somalia, as a member of the OIC Contact Group on the formerly occupied territories of Azerbaijan, has consistently supported Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. Additionally, Somalia-Turkey relations are developing in a manner aligned with Azerbaijan’s interests, as Turkey is a strategic partner for Azerbaijan and plays a significant role in its cooperation with Africa. Somalia is also an economically developing country, and there is great potential for cooperation with Azerbaijan in energy, logistics, agriculture, and humanitarian fields.
The African continent, with its young population, natural resources, and development potential, has become one of the main focuses of the 21st century. Having suffered from colonialism for many years, the continent continues to struggle with economic and political dependencies in some cases. However, rapid urbanization, technological advancements, and infrastructure development are enabling Africa to play a greater role in the global economy. African countries can become key players in the world economy by properly managing their natural resources and human capital. In this regard, the experience of countries like Azerbaijan, which have successfully achieved development, can be beneficial for Africa. African countries hold a special sympathy for Azerbaijan, primarily because Azerbaijan has no hidden geopolitical agenda and offers sincere cooperation. Unlike other countries, Azerbaijan adheres to the principles of equal partnership in its relations with Africa and strives to provide real support for the continent’s development.
Humanitarian and cultural ties also contribute to deepening these relations. Azerbaijan’s various humanitarian funds and organizations implement health, education, and ecological projects in African countries, further enhancing mutual trust. Additionally, Azerbaijan’s experience in energy and agriculture can serve as an interesting model for African countries. Azerbaijan is interested in investing in various infrastructure projects in Africa to stimulate local economies, and these steps are positively received by African states. Such an approach not only contributes to the development of African countries but also enhances Azerbaijan’s international reputation.
Azerbaijan is one of the few countries that actively opposes the colonial policies of France and other nations and supports African states. Particularly, Azerbaijan’s clear stance against colonialism on international platforms is well-received in Africa. Azerbaijan provides both diplomatic and humanitarian support to African countries in their struggle for political and economic independence. Our country defends Africa’s rights in international organizations while participating in investment and technical assistance projects to contribute to their economic development. Furthermore, Azerbaijan supports African countries in strengthening their voice within international organizations. Azerbaijan also participates in joint projects to support the development of energy, agriculture, and transportation sectors in African countries. To support educational development, Azerbaijan offers scholarships to students and promotes academic exchange programs. Additionally, our country organizes business forums and exhibitions to deepen economic cooperation with African states and facilitate their integration into global markets. This strategic approach positions Azerbaijan as a reliable and sincere partner in Africa.
Azerbaijan Bridges the Turkish World and Africa
Azerbaijan plays a pivotal role in fostering institutional cooperation between the Turkic world and Africa. Significant steps are being taken within the frameworks of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to expand relations with African countries. Azerbaijan is one of the key actors contributing to the development of political, economic, and cultural ties between these two regions. Within the OTS, implementing joint projects with African countries, particularly in transportation, energy, and agriculture, is a priority. Additionally, Azerbaijan actively promotes the deepening of political, economic, and cultural cooperation between the Turkic world and Africa.
Through international events and forums initiated by Azerbaijan, relations between Africa and Turkic states are expanding. Azerbaijan creates various economic platforms to increase trade turnover, evaluate investment opportunities, and develop strategic partnerships with African countries. With Azerbaijan’s support, African countries are beginning to participate in economic and infrastructure projects within the framework of cooperation with Turkic-speaking states. This cooperation not only impacts economic but also cultural fields, strengthening historical and social ties between Africa and the Turkic world.
Azerbaijan’s Development Model as an Example for Africa
The achievements Azerbaijan has made in a short period since the dissolution of the USSR can serve as an interesting example for African countries. Proper management of oil revenues, infrastructure development, economic diversification, and international cooperation policies have shaped Azerbaijan’s successful development model. African countries, especially those with energy resources, can learn from Azerbaijan’s experience and utilize cooperation opportunities to accelerate their economic growth. Additionally, Azerbaijan can share its expertise in agriculture, tourism, and technology, creating new opportunities for African countries.
In summary, relations between Azerbaijan and African countries are rapidly developing. The official visit of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmud to Azerbaijan on February 11-12 marks a new phase in this cooperation. Azerbaijan remains committed to the principles of fair and equal partnership, aiming to further strengthen ties with the African continent. These relations will contribute to both Azerbaijan’s growing international reputation and Africa’s development. Expanding economic, political, and humanitarian ties with African countries will bring mutual benefits and lay the groundwork for long-term strategic partnerships.
