February 6, 2025Dr. Mohieldin Naeem Mohammed Saeed, Sudan’s Minister of Energy and Oil, has confirmed the readiness of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) to inspect and assist in the reconstruction of the Khartoum Refinery following its liberation from militias. This announcement came during the Minister’s recent visit to the refinery, accompanied by high-ranking officials, including the Director of Khartoum State Police and the Director of Khartoum State Security.
The Minister’s visit followed his return from an energy conference in Saudi Arabia and aimed to assess the damage caused during the conflict. Dr. Saeed revealed that several units within the refinery were severely damaged, resulting in the loss of approximately 700,000 barrels of gasoline, equivalent to the cargo of a large tanker. Despite the significant losses, the Minister expressed optimism, noting the high morale and determination of the refinery’s staff to expedite the reconstruction process.
During the visit, the Minister commended the efforts of the refinery’s engineers, technicians, and civil defense forces in extinguishing fires and controlling the damage, which significantly reduced material losses and preserved the refinery’s infrastructure. He urged the technical and engineering teams to accelerate maintenance and rehabilitation efforts to ensure the refinery resumes operations as soon as possible.
The Director-General of the Khartoum Refinery provided a detailed technical presentation outlining the extent of the damage to the refinery’s core units. He emphasized that the destruction was systematic and would require substantial efforts to restore the facility to its former state. However, he expressed confidence that with determination and hard work, the refinery could be rebuilt.
This visit underscores the Sudanese government’s commitment to rebuilding critical infrastructure and restoring energy production capabilities in the aftermath of conflict. The collaboration with international partners like CNPC highlights the importance of global cooperation in post-conflict recovery efforts.
