Czech Republic and Ethiopia Highlight Importance of Strengthening Defense Cooperation
February 5, 2025The National Police Service (NPS) of Kenya has initiated Operation Ondoa Jangili, a security operation aimed at dismantling suspected hideouts used by the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in Marsabit and Isiolo counties. According to a February 3 statement by the NPS, the operation seeks to root out individuals involved in illegal activities, including arms trafficking, drug smuggling, human trafficking, illegal mining, incitement of tribal conflicts, and kidnapping for ransom. The targeted areas include Sololo, Moyale, North Horr, and Merti sub-counties.
In response, the OLA has denied any involvement in criminal operations, asserting that it respects Kenya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The group stated that “over 95% of our Southern Command forces operate deep within Oromia,” emphasizing its commitment to the safety and security of the Borana community and other Kenyan groups. The OLA also accused high-ranking Ethiopian military and intelligence officials of facilitating illegal activities in the region and urged Kenyan authorities not to be misled by Ethiopian officials.
The operation highlights ongoing tensions in the region, with Kenya stepping up efforts to address cross-border security challenges while the OLA seeks to distance itself from accusations of criminality. The situation underscores the complex dynamics between regional armed groups and state security forces, as well as the broader implications
