February 2, 2025US President Donald Trump ordered an airstrike against ISIS terrorists in Somalia on Saturday. Authorities in the Horn of Africa nation have now provided further details about the operation.
Mogadishu/Washington – A US airstrike targeting positions of the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group in northern Somalia has killed at least 46 militants, according to local authorities. “Among them are 12 foreign fighters,” said General Mohamed Ahmed, the military spokesperson for the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, where the strike took place on Saturday. “We believe they primarily come from Arab countries.” The details could not be independently verified at this time.
On Saturday, Trump posted on the platform X that he had ordered the airstrikes. He stated that the caves where ISIS fighters were hiding had been destroyed and many terrorists killed. His message to ISIS and other terrorist groups was clear: “We will find you, and we will kill you.”
US drone strikes against Islamist terrorists in Somalia have occurred repeatedly in the past, though they are typically not publicly highlighted.
Last month, Puntland authorities announced an offensive against Islamist militants in a mountainous region. At the time, there was also mention of air support provided by the United Arab Emirates.
Somalia has been battling Islamist insurgents for years, with groups carrying out terrorist attacks both within the country and in neighboring states. In addition to ISIS fighters, the Al-Shabaab militant group remains a significant threat to the Horn of Africa nation.
