February 3, 2025Mogadishu, Somalia – In a significant step towards boosting Somalia’s fisheries sector, the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Ahmed Hassan Aden, welcomed a delegation from the Turkish government to discuss investment opportunities in fishing and marine resources. This initiative is a part of the implementation of the defense agreement and economic cooperation previously signed between Somalia and Turkey, with a focus on enhancing sea resource utilization.
The discussions culminated in the signing of a Fisheries Cooperation Agreement (MoU), a move that is anticipated to channel billions of dollars into Somalia’s fisheries sector. This partnership aims to provide effective development opportunities across the country, underscoring Somalia’s potential to become a global leader in fish production.
Somalia’s ocean, renowned as one of the most resource-rich in the western Indian Ocean, holds vast potential for sustainable exploitation. With proper investments and international cooperation, the country is poised to capitalize on its abundant marine resources, marking a new era for its fishing industry.

This has sparked considerable interest, with the Turkish government emerging as a significant partner in driving investment in Somalia’s marine resources.
Mr. Ahmed Hassan Aden emphasized the importance of this agreement, stating, “This partnership with Turkey is a major milestone for our fisheries sector. It reflects our commitment to fostering international cooperation and developing our blue economy. We are excited about the significant economic opportunities this will bring to Somalia.”
The agreement is seen as a pivotal development in Somalia’s economic landscape, offering promising prospects for job creation, economic growth, and sustainable development. It aligns with the broader vision of enhancing Somalia’s role in the global fisheries market.
