Somaliland President Irro to Visit UAE Amid Regional Diplomatic Pressure
January 24, 2025Cairo – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has openly acknowledged that he discussed the potential deployment of Egyptian troops to Somalia as part of the new African Union peace mission (AUSSOM). The revelation came following his meeting with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Cairo earlier this week.
During the high-level talks, the two leaders explored ways to enhance regional security and stability, with a particular focus on Somalia’s ongoing fight against terrorism and efforts to bolster peacekeeping initiatives. President el-Sisi emphasized Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia through strategic partnerships and military cooperation under the framework of the African Union’s efforts to stabilize the region.
The African Union’s new peace mission, AUSSOM, was launched to replace the previous ATMIS mission, with a renewed mandate to assist Somali forces in combating insurgency and strengthening national security institutions.
Officials from both countries are expected to hold further discussions to finalize the scope and timeline of any potential deployment, amid growing regional efforts to ensure long-term peace in Somalia.
